Guide Overview of business rates

Show all parts of this guide

2. What are business rates and when are bills sent?

Business rates are charged on most non-domestic properties, for example, shops, offices, pubs, warehouses and factories. Properties exempt from rating include:

  • farm buildings and land (excluding buildings used as offices or for other business activities)
  • fish farms
  • places of religious worship
  • buildings used for training or welfare of disabled people

The business rates bill

We will send you an annual business rates bill in March for the following tax year.

Explanatory notes are sent with all bills and they give information about business rates.
