3. How might we become involved in children’s issues?

  • Providing homes (for example, housing provision, adaptation and allocation)
  • Running services that assist or intervene in family matters (for example, benefits, environmental health, housing allocations)
  • Letting or operating public venues where children will visit (for example, leisure venues and museums)
  • Commissioning or contracting services where contractors come into contact with children (for example, housing repairs, refuse and recycling, leisure)
  • Providing specific services or facilities for children (for example, play schemes, crèches, play parks)
  • Running council services that children may need to use (either on their own behalf or on behalf of parents, guardians or siblings – NB children as carers)
  • Officers or councillors visiting homes under any circumstances (for example, planning enforcement, environmental health, waste collection, rent collection, housing repairs, canvassing, responding to complaints, conducting surveys or inspections)
  • Inspecting, licensing or auditing other agencies who may come into contact with children (for example, environmental health, building control, safety officer, contract managers, licensing)
  • Monitoring officer roles, disciplinary or grievance roles and legal reviews
  • Council IT systems and child pornography risks
  • Misuse of film or photography of children
