How to apply
If you want to change the details of your licence we will need to approve this first.
You may need to change the details of your licence if:
- the existing licence holder changes their name or contact details
- there are changes to the licence, premises or how you operate that you need to tell us about

You will need to pay a fee to change the details of your licence. Please make sure you are aware of how much this will cost.
You will need a credit or debit card to pay by phone.
Any personal information which you provide will be held and used by East Devon District Council for the purpose of issuing you with a licence for animal boarding and on the basis of public task.
Who will receive or see my personal information? Your information may also be shared within East Devon District Council for the purposes of carrying out our lawful functions. Otherwise your personal information will not be disclosed to anybody outside East Devon District Council without your permission, unless there is a lawful reason to do so, for example disclosure is necessary for crime prevention or detection purposes. Your information will be held securely and will not be retained for any longer than is necessary. There are a number of rights available to you in relation to our use of your personal information, depending on the reason for processing. Depending on the changes you are making, it may be necessary for a vet or our animal warden to come and inspect the premises.
The licence will then either be granted (and you will receive this in the post) or it may be refused or have additional conditions added to it.
If your application is likely to be refused or have additional conditions added we will contact you.
If an inspection is not needed then we will make the changes needed and a new licence will be sent to you in the post.
If you are surrendering your licence this will take effect from the date you have stated in the application and you will not be licensed if you continue to operate the business after that date.
Renewing your licence
When details of a licence are changed, the date of expiry will stay the same. This means that you will need to apply to renew your licence at least one month before 31 December each year.
What you can do if you haven't heard from us
It is in the public interest that we process your application before deciding if it can be granted. This means that you'll need to wait for our decision before you start operating. If after a month you haven't heard from us please contact us by email or telephone for an update.
What you can do if your application is unsuccessful
Please contact us to discuss why you have been refused a licence or if you think we have asked for an unreasonable condition.
If you are not happy with our decision, you can appeal to the magistrates court. A court may give directions on the issue of a licence or on any conditions imposed.
If you want to surrender your licence you can write to us to tell us this.
If you want to make changes to your licence you can write to us explaining the changes. You will need to send a cheque for the fee made payable to East Devon District Council.
