Sight is the sense people fear losing the most, yet many of us don’t know how to look after our eyes.
Regular eye tests are important for all the family, young and old, because they can detect a range of health conditions before they become serious. One in five people will live with sight loss in their lifetime despite at least half of all cases being avoidable. Having an eye test can be the first step to saving your sight.
RNIB’s free eye health guide offers seven tips for looking after your sight. In summary these tips are:
1. Get a sight test
2. Quit smoking
3. Keep contact lenses clean
4. Maintain a healthy weight by eating well and exercising [to help reduce risk of diabetes]
5. Know your family history especially for glaucoma
6. Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays
7. Take a break from your screen to rest your eyes

In National Eye Health Week, from Monday 24 to Sunday 30 September 2018, charities, organisations and health professionals working in the sight loss sector will join together to raise awareness of eye health and the importance of having regular eye tests.
