Initially started with central government ‘Our Place’ funding, Honiton Together is currently a collaboration between East Devon Volunteer Support Agency, Devon County Council and East Devon District Council. A networking and idea-sharing forum, the initiative which developed and ‘stuck’ was an annual ‘Dragons’ Den’, where local community groups pitch for funding to an audience of local people and four dragons.
We are hopeful that Honiton Town Council will play an active part in the Dragons’ Den in 2016.
The benefit of the Dragons’ Den is that local people and stakeholders get to hear about some of the wonderful grassroots projects that are going on the local area.
This year the winners were
- Honiton Youth Club, who asked for funding for a portable ramp to make all of the Community Use Building accessible. One of the wheelchair bound young people who would benefit from this was part of the pitching group and he clearly won over the hearts of the audience.
- Axe Valley Visiting Scheme, who delivered a moving pitch which showed how people suffering from dementia can find comfort and meaning in singing and ‘story-board’ work. They pledged to show a film ‘alive inside’ to a Honiton audience to raise awareness of this.
- HALFF, which stands for Health and Local Food for Families talked about the rise in childhood obesity – especially prevalent in low-income families - and also the missed opportunity for ‘family time’ when families don’t eat together.
