How to apply
If you want to run a pet shop you will need to apply for a licence. You can do this online.
You will need to pay a fee for your licence. Please make sure you are aware of how much this will cost.
Please be aware that the legislation is very specific in stating that all pet shop licences must expire on the 31 December each year. This applies to the year they are issued and every following year they are renewed. This means that regardless of what time of the year your licence is first issued, it will expire on the 31 December.
You will also need to pay the vet's fee for inspecting the premises. We will ask you to pay this after the inspection has taken place.

Following your application we will arrange for a vet to inspect the premises.
The vet will send us their report and the licence will then either be granted and we'll send you your licence in the post or it may be refused or have additional conditions added to it.
If your application is likely to be refused or have additional conditions added we will contact you.
Renewing your licence
You will need to apply to renew a pet shop licence each year if you want to continue running the business.
What you can do if you haven't heard from us
It is in the public interest that we process your application before deciding if it can be granted. This means that you'll need to wait for our decision before you start operating. If after a month you haven't heard from us please contact us by email or telephone for an update.
What you can do if your application is unsuccessful
Please contact us to discuss why you have been refused a licence or if you think we have asked for an unreasonable condition.
If you are not happy with our decision, you can appeal to the magistrates court. A court may give directions on the issue of a licence or on any conditions imposed.
You can also apply by completing this application form and sending it to us in the post or delivering it to our offices.
You will need to send with the application:
- a cheque for the fee (made payable to East Devon District Council)
- a current certificate of insurance for the business
