Guide Guidance on applying for a horse drawn hackney carriage

5. Horse standards

The horse(s) to be used to draw the carriage must be identified to us.  A vet specialising in horses will examine all these animals and a certificate of veterinary inspection will be supplied to us. We will supply blank copies of the necessary vet’s certificate. The cost of the vet’s fees will be the applicant’s responsibility.

Any horse used for the carriage of passengers should not normally be less than six years old.

We will take into account veterinary advice on the type of operation and working hours planned for the carriage and the number of horses available to draw the carriage. For example, a single horse may not be considered suitable to operate a regular daily service.
