Applications can be made at any time during the year, all private hire licences expire on 31 May. Where the licence starts within six months of the the annual expiry date a reduced fee will apply.

In order to apply for a private hire vehicle licence You will need to:

Complete the attached application for private hire vehicle licence
You will need to pay a fee for your private hire vehicle licence. Please make sure you are aware of how much this will cost.

All applications need to be sent to the licensing office together with:
- fee, please make all cheques payable to East Devon District Council, credit or debit card payment can be made by telephoning the licensing office - note credit card payments incur a 1.5% additional charge
- insurance certificate or cover note (to be a minimum of £1,000,000) in accordance with part VI of the Road Traffic Act 1988
- vehicle registration document or lease agreement
- vehicle inspection report, together with an MOT test certificate if applicable. Vehicles may be tested up to six weeks prior to application vehicle inspection report form
Both the vehicle registration document and the insurance policy holder must be in the same name as the applicant of the licence.
You will need to telephone the licensing office to make an appointment to bring your vehicle to our offices for inspection by one of our licensing officers.
Following a satisfactory vehicle inspection and presentation of original documents the licence will be issued, usually within a few weeks.
