These homes at Waggs Plot, Axminster are an example of affordable housing recently built by East Devon District Council.

Council's housing service is offering more homes to more people and aims to get applicants homed fast

East Devon District Council is providing even more affordable homes for people in East Devon faster than ever before. Households considered in greatest need of accommodation are now being housed within just six-12 months - previously these applicants would have had to wait three to four years to be housed by the council or another social housing provider.

The good news is this in turn is opening up opportunities for applicants in the lower priority bands. People who have registered for housing in bands C and D with Devon Home Choice (a choice-based letting scheme offering local authority and housing association properties across Devon), who thought they had no hope of being housed, now have an improved chance.

The improved turnaround is due to two important factors:

  • Developers are building more new homes in East Devon, which has led to an increase in the numbers of affordable housing available for shared ownership or to rent.
  • We have worked extremely hard over the past few years to ensure that there are fewer homeless households, which has decreased demand from those in greatest need of a home.

Around 600 affordable homes available

Approximately 300 newly built affordable homes will be available each year for the next three to four years. In addition, nearly 300 of our own existing homes become vacant every year and need new tenants.

We can offer a wide range of properties for letting, including family homes, accommodation suitable for single people and sheltered housing for those who need support.

Councillor Jill Elson, portfolio holder for Sustainable Homes and Communities, said:

Many people think we can't help them, so they don't contact us. But we are actively looking to help more people who need housing.

We want to encourage more people with a local connection to East Devon to register for housing with the council. We still need to let our homes, so we are offering more properties to applicants in the lower priority bands.

This is such a good opportunity and we don't want people to miss it. We want people to tell their friends and relatives about our improved affordable housing availability in East Devon. We can't always help everyone, but we promise to try our best over the coming years to assist the people who need housing.

So please pass the message on to everyone - that they have an improved chance of finding a rented home with us. We are here to help in any way we can.
