Woodbury Salterton celebrates with a fitness and circus skills event

Woodbury Parish Council and East Devon District Council have worked together to obtain the brand new outdoor gym and play equipment that Woodbury Salterton residents wanted.

New outdoor gym and play equipment to the value of £29,700 has been installed at Woodbury Salterton's recreation field and the facility  will be officially opened at a family event offering free circus skills on Saturday 23 May. This will be held at the recreation field between 9.30am and 11.30am. Go along, see the new equipment and try out all sorts of circus skills like plate spinning, poi or hula hooping.

The funding for this project (Section 106 money) was made available as a result of a number of housing developments in the Woodbury Salterton area. Section 106 money is collected from developers and spent by East Devon District Council, which chooses to involve the community in how it allocates funds.

Last year a group of Woodbury Parish Councillors and EDDC asked community groups, residents and other organisations to put forward their ideas as to how available sports funding should be spent in the whole parish. All eligible, affordable and possible ideas were subject to a community vote.

Winning

The winning Woodbury Salterton project was for a £15,000 outdoor gym. There was £7,400 available, so half of the chosen outdoor gym has been put in now and the other half will be provided when the rest of the funding becomes available.

There was also £22,300 of Section 106 money to spend on play equipment. East Devon District Council and Woodbury Parish Council  worked with local children to find out what activities they would like to see in the play area. They most wanted climbing, sliding (preferably a zip wire) and swinging equipment (preferably a basket swing).

The parish council sent off the community’s requirements for the play area and outdoor gym to several play companies, who came back with their designs. Residents of all ages then decided on their favourite designs, which have now been installed.
