Last Saturday’s wet weather did nothing to deter art lovers as they flocked to the opening of the new South West Academy exhibition at East Devon District Council’s popular Thelma Hulbert Gallery.
Over 200 gallery goers attended the opening to enjoy the work of some of their favourite South West artists including some well known artists such as Professor Alan Cotton, FRSA, represented by Messum’s Gallery, London and Peter Randall-Page, RA, whose sculptures feature in permanent National collections including Tate Britain.
Phil Creek, one of the exhibiting artists and also Chair of the Trustees of the South West Academy commented,
“The South West Academy is very lucky to have their first exhibition of 2016 at THG – it is a gem of a gallery.”
The exhibition was opened by Phil Norrey, Chief Executive, Devon County Council who said,
“I am very pleased to be opening this exhibition at the excellent Thelma Hulbert Gallery. The South West is a culturally and creatively vibrant part of the country. The ‘old’ South West region, as it used to be designated, is actually the second largest creative community outside London. There is a really strong sense of community and creativity here. The South West Academy encourages this creativity and this exhibition is a smashing example of some of the region’s best artists coming together.”
“It was fantastic to see so many come to our opening; we have been overwhelmed by its popularity”,
“It ranks as one of our best openings ever and we took over £1,200 in sales in just one day! The prints and catalogues are proving particularly popular. This is a great way to invest in and support local art. It is an excellent start to the exhibition, which continues until 13th February.”
All of the work in the exhibition and the South West Academy's new hardback publication ‘Art, People and Place’ are available to purchase throughout the exhibition.
