First consultation event for residents to view work to date is on Wednesday 11th July at Axminster Heritage Centre from 2pm to 7pm
East Devon District Council has appointed consultants to produce a masterplan for the development of the Axminster Relief Road and the associated development following its successful bid for £10 million from the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund to help deliver the project.
The masterplan consultants - HYAS Associates Ltd - are working closely with Persimmon Homes and the Crown Estate who control the majority of the allocated site to produce a masterplan that shows how the relief road will be delivered including covering the remaining cost of the road which is estimated to be £16.7 million in total.
A first consultation event on the masterplan will be held at Axminster Heritage Centre on Wednesday 11th July where there will be a workshop for key stakeholders in the morning followed by a public drop-in event from 2pm to 7pm for residents of the town to view the work to date.
One of the main challenges of the project will be enabling the delivery of the relief road alongside the homes, primary school, employment space, community facilities, and open space required in the Local Plan for East Devon. The masterplan will also detail how these various uses are distributed across the site and how key vehicle and pedestrian routes ensure that the development is integrated with the existing town.
Work has started on understanding the opportunities and issues with the site and producing options for its development. The consultation sessions will inform this work and the council hopes as many residents as possible will come to the afternoon and evening session on July 11 to see how much work has already been carried out and to provide important local knowledge, information and views on the approach to the development.
Following this event the consultants will be considering all of the information and views that they have gathered to produce a draft masterplan for the development over the summer with a further consultation event for residents to comment on the proposals planned for early September.
Cllr Ian Hall, East Devon District Council’s ward member for Axminster Rural and County Councillor for Axminster, said:
The relief road is the keystone to unlocking a great future for Axminster and will well and truly put the town on the map. It is great to see these proposals for the road and the development to the east of the town progressing.
I can’t wait to sit down with the consultants and get stuck into helping them develop a template for the development of the site so that it provides the high quality homes and jobs that the town needs as well as the relief road that will reduce congestion and air pollution in the town.
I urge residents of the town to come to the consultation event and let us know what you think so that we can ensure that the development meets your aspirations as well as mine.
The masterplan will provide a template for the development of the site which will provide a guide for planning applications for the site which are expected to be made later this year by Persimmon Homes and the Crown Estate.
