The council is responsible for the naming and numbering of streets and buildings in East Devon, under the Town Improvement Clauses Act 1847. We do this to make sure that new street names and building names and numbers are allocated logically to ensure, among other things:

  • the effective delivery of mail,
  • that emergency service vehicles are able to locate addresses easily.

You can change a house name or register a new development, following the procedures detailed in the Council's Street Naming and Numbering Policy.

If proposals comply with our policy and do not meet with an objection from the Town/Parish Councils or the Royal Mail Address Development Centre, the new address will be formally allocated and all relevant bodies will be notified.
