Woodbury Lawn Tennis Club offers social tennis and competitions for all ages and all abilities, so when they applied for funding from our Small Community Grant, we were delighted to be able to support their community-led group.

As successful applicants, Woodbury Lawn Tennis Club used the £500 grant to purchase two gazebos (one small and one large) and tables so that their members, visitors and visiting teams could meet outdoors.

These additions have proved a great success in improving the social interaction of their members, some of whom are elderly and welcome the safe environment to meet with others.

Unfortunately, the windy weather last year saw the demise of the smaller gazebo, which was permanently attached to the club house, however the larger gazebo is used for events, tournaments and open days and is lent out to other organisations in the village with no charge. The larger gazebo has also proved an asset to their junior coaching programme as when a shower of rain interrupts the on-court activity their coach can go through a theory session under a shelter.

To replace the small gazebo, the club committee decided that a new pavilion is needed which was installed at the end of last year. It’s still a working progress as it requires finishing off, tidying up and restocking with furniture, but we look forward to sharing the outcome with you in due course.
