Our annual report2017/18

East Devon District Council is proud to present its annual report for 2017/18. This report looks back at our performance over the year and charts our progress against our current Council Plan and its priorities.

Council priority one Encouraging communities to be outstanding

Our work included:

  • 233 New affordable homes
  • 85%
    Householder planning applications determined within eight weeks, exceeding the government-set target of 70 per cent
  • 99.7%
    Rent due on council homes collected
  • We spent over £8 million on repairs and improvements to tenant’s homes.
  • We successfully bid for £10 million of government money to help deliver a north/south relief road for Axminster that will help to reduce congestion and air pollution in the town.

Council priority two Developing an outstanding local economy

Our work included:

  • £59m+Of investments
  • 400+Local businesses supported
  • £782,000Grants for rural economic development projects
  • There has been major investment in the West End of the district, including the opening of the Hall and Woodhouse Pub in Cranbrook. This was a £3.25 million investment and created 35 new jobs.
  • A new SkyPark Office build has also been developed and is now occupied by One Serve. The move has enabled this local company to expand and stay in the district, creating ten new jobs and a further 20 planned in the next five years.
  • Lidl has invested £55 million to create a large new distribution centre. This has created 400 new jobs in the area.

Council priority three Delivering and promoting our outstanding environment

Our work included:

  • 57%
    Recycling of households waste
  • 480,000 Household recycling and waste collections a month
  • 1,100 Tonnes of green waste collected

Council priority four Continuously improving to be an outstanding council

Our work included:

  • 98.98%
    Council Tax collected
  • 99.20%
    Business rates collected
  • Our Council Tax collection performance is the 13th highest in the country out of 326 councils. We’re in the top 4 per cent of councils) and are top in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall.
  • Our business rates collection performance is in the top 15 per cent of councils. We’re 47th highest in the country out of 326 councils.

How do we get the information in our annual report?

We monitor our performance on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis through reports to Cabinet. These reports use the traffic light system to highlight any issues and to track our performance against performance indicators, systems thinking measures, council and service plan objectives.
