This consultation is now closed, residents had until 5pm on Monday 14 March 2022 to have their say on our proposed code of conduct for councillors.

By law, we must have a councillors’ code of conduct which is consistent with  the seven principles of public life, which govern the expected ethical standards of those elected to public office. The principles are:

  • Selflessness
  • Integrity
  • Objectivity
  • Accountability
  • Openness
  • Honesty
  • Leadership

A town or parish council can choose to adopt its own code of conduct or that of its district council.

Recently the Local Government Association published an example of a good code of conduct and we have looked at this whilst revising ours. The Local Government Association have also provided a useful guidance document to accompany their model Code of Conduct, they recommend that this is read alongside their model code of conduct and we would recommend it is read alongside our proposed code of conduct as it gives useful context.

We presented residents with our draft code of conduct and asked for their views. We asked questions on four particular aspects of our draft code of conduct for councillors, these parts could potentially be changed. We then asked if you had any other feedback, although this extra feedback may not lead to any changes depending on what it is, as by law there are certain things we cannot alter or remove.

We received 66 responses, which we are now analysing before feeding back to Councillors.
