1. Purpose of the policy
This policy replaces our previous policy and sets out:
a) how we will meet our legal duties under the equality legislation, and
b) how we will promote equality and diversity as a community leader, service provider and employer.
In our role as community leaders, our values underpin the principles and standards that guide us in planning and providing services and in the way we treat people. Our values are:

This policy sets out our commitment to creating an environment in which everyone in East Devon can take full part in all aspects of life (see Appendix 1 for an analysis of the population and issues in our District). We aim to reflect, promote and respond to the needs of the community by listening to and involving local people and partners in our work. This builds on our systems thinking work of designing services to deliver what matters to our customers and residents.
We work hard to eliminate prejudice and discrimination, both in our organisation and in our communities. Our purpose in this work is to:
‘promote equality and eliminate inequality’.
At the time that this policy has been reviewed there have been no grievances or complaints from staff or residents in relation to this policy.
