Businesses opening this week are being reminded to check and maintain their systems by members of the Council's environmental health team this week.

Legionella/ Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia. It's a lung infection you catch by inhaling droplets of water from the likes of air conditioning units, shower heads or hot tubs. It's not a common disease, but it can be very serious.

Symptoms of Legionnaires' disease are similar to COVID-19 and include high temperature, feverishness and chills, cough, muscle pains, headache, and pneumonia.

  • For information, businesses can call East Devon environmental health team 01395 517456 or email us
  • The European Working Group for Legionella Infections (ESGLI) has put together a guidance document on how to best manage Legionella in building water systems during this COVID-19 outbreak.
  • It is very important that water systems are still well maintained to prevent future health issues like Legionella outbreaks. Detailed guidance on what to do is available from the Health and Safety Executives website.
