2. Fire safety for residents in flats
As a Landlord, we have a duty to manage fire safety within blocks of flats containing communal areas.
We are investing time and money in ensuring that tenants and leaseholders who live in blocks of flats have maximum protection in the event of a fire, and we take tough action on practices that could block escape routes or fuel fires in communal and public areas.
- Familiarise yourself with the advice given on the Fire Action Notices located in hallways, corridors and landing areas. In the event of a fire follow this advice.
- Do not leave or store items any items in communal areas, including mobility scooters, bicycles and rubbish sacks. Communal areas must be kept clear and free from obstructions at all times to maintain a safe and clear escape route.
- Electrical appliances such as washing machines, tumble driers and fridge freezers should not be placed or used in any areas outside of your own flat, including any outside storage cupboard.
Housing officers make regular visits to buildings with communal areas and if any items are found to have been left there these will be removed and stored. Tenants will be charged £25 for the return of each item.
If you live in a flat with a balcony, you must not use this area for barbeques or storage of flammable materials and excessive amounts of combustible materials (i.e. paper. cardboard, timber).
