EDDC tenants conference 2019

A conference organised by tenants for tenants and leaseholders

Each year a group of East Devon District Council tenants arrange a tenant’s conference. Feedback received from tenants helps the Conference Committee decide the theme, speakers and venue for the following year.

This year on 21 October 2019, 59 tenants, 18 youth, 12 staff and contractors, 2 Councillors and 7 guests attended the conference held at Westpoint Conference Centre, Clyst St Mary, Exeter.

The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Caring for our Community’.

Peter Sullivan a tenant from Sidmouth did an excellent job of chairing the day.

Tenants were involved in two ‘meet and greet’ sessions where they met the new contractors Ian Williams and then heard about the Home Safeguard services including the products on offer to help those who are needing additional support.

Tenants’ were also able to have their questions answered directly by staff, councillors and stall holders who were present at the conference. Stall holders attended were from Devon Carers, Ian Williams, Care Direct and Fareshare.

There was a special display from Lucinda Cliff (Mobile Support Officer) showing Millwey Memories project that helped Axminster residents share their memories of Millwey Rise from 1930s to present day.

Once again this was a big success. Those attending enjoyed being able to speak with and question staff members face to face about their area of service.

Sue Bewes, Landlord Services Manager and Peter Sullivan (Tenant Housing Review Board member) gave a presentation on the recently updated Resident Involvement Strategy, explaining the ways tenants can get involved with the housing service.

Sue Bewes and Laura Hicks (Mobile Support Officer) gave a presentation on what a Mobile Support Officers role provides and how they can support vulnerable tenants living in supported accommodation.

After a delicious buffet lunch supplied by Posh Nosh who are the in house Westpoint caterers, Katie Buckley from Devon Carers gave a very interesting talk on what support is available to carers. They provide three levels of support, that being, universal services, targeted support and personal support. If any carers need support they can call Devon Carers on 03456434435.

Again this year was an award for an East Devon District Council tenant who deserves the thanks of the community, who works for the good of others.

There was also a staff award to someone who can be relied upon to be helpful, friendly and give excellent customer service.

There was a youth award for a young person who helps others or makes your community a better place to be.

Tenants and housing staff were asked to put forward their nominations and the awards were presented at the tenant conference.

The winner of the staff award for Excellent Customer Service is Sarah Routley (Mobile Support Officer). See attached picture of Sarah receiving her award from Amy Gilbert-Jeans, Housing Service Lead.

The winner of the tenant award for Outstanding Service to Your Community is Peter Sullivan (Sidmouth). See attached picture of Peter receiving his award from John Golding, Strategic Lead for Housing & Environment.

The winner of the youth award is Bailey Hall (Axminster) aged 17.

There was a free raffle with many of the prizes donated by the Conference Committee.

The overall assessment of the day was Good venue, excellent lunch, well run and very informative.
