When it comes to heating your home efficiently knowing how to use the heating controls is essential. If they are not used properly you will be losing money, could be left feeling cold and could cause additional problems to your property like condensation and mould.

If a property has been empty for some time it may take a long time for the property to reach its optimum temperature. Once a property has reached the desired temperature the heating system will need to be used regularly to prevent the temperature falling to an undesirable level.

It is cheaper and easier to keep a property at a constant temperature rather than letting it cool down and then reheating using maximum power which leads to increased costs.

What are heating controls?

As their name implies, heating controls can allow you to choose when the heating is on, how warm it is, and where you want the warmth. The controls and systems will differ depending on whether your heating system is run by gas, electricity or oil. Please follow the links to either Electric Heating, Gas Central Heating or Oil Fired Heating.

Once you have installed or located the controls, it is important to ensure they are used correctly. This is the easiest way to keep your rooms at a comfortable temperature and in doing so; they'll help to reduce your household's fuel bills and CO2 emissions, too.

Take a little time to find out what each control does using the information on these pages. Please also refer to the instruction manuals that came with the heating controls (if you have them). If you don't have any manuals to hand, copies can usually be downloaded from manufacturer's website.

If you have faulty heating systems or controls in your rented property we recommend you approach you landlord or letting agent in the first instance to give them a chance to remedy the problem.
