Are you public spirited and interested in promoting high ethical standards? Could you adjudicate complaints about councillor conduct? Do you have an interest in how local councils run? Do you have a small amount of time to get involved? If you are politically neutral, tactful, have respect for others and can consider complex information – please get in touch.

We need two people to take on the role of Independent Person to help our Standards Committee promote and maintain high standards of conduct by our district and local councillors. Your role will be to discuss any complaints that a Councillor has breached the Code of Conduct with the District Council’s Monitoring Officer before he decides on appropriate action. You will also be consulted following any investigation. Much of the work will be done by email and phone and any meetings are likely to be in the daytime. Training will be given to help you in this role.

Anyone can apply, as long as they are not related to or a close friend of current councillors or officers of East Devon District Council or Town and Parish Councils within East Devon or who have been a councillor or officer in any of those bodies in the last five years. The Council is keen to hear from you whatever your background. You should be able to demonstrate a commitment to maintaining high standards in public life and show an interest in local government.

We offer an allowance (£50 for up to four hours and £100 for more than four hours) and travelling expenses to the successful candidate.

For further details and to request an application form please contact Anna Herbert, PA to the Monitoring Officer on 01395 517535 or AHerbert@eastdevon.gov.uk.

Closing date: noon on 9 April 2021. Interviews will be held w/c 19 April 2021.
