Are you public spirited and interested in promoting high ethical standards? Could you adjudicate complaints about councillor conduct? Do you have an interest in how local councils run? Do you have a small amount of time to get involved? If you are politically neutral, tactful, have respect for others and can consider complex information – please get in touch.

The role of the East Devon District Council Standards Committee is detailed in the attached documents taken from the Council’s Constitution.

The Standards Committee has a critical role in upholding the standards of conduct of elected councillors when carrying out their role and helping ensure a robust and appropriate framework is in place in relation to governance arrangements.

As an independent representative you will have an important role in helping fulfil that responsibility by using your experience and skills and providing an independent perspective. Work will entail engaging in discussion and providing your views to the Standards Committee and also to the Hearings Sub-Committee when considering cases that there has been a breach of the code of conduct.

While you don’t have a voting right, the Standards Committee recently agreed to take an informal vote prior to their actual decision to enable the views of the co-opted members to be fully taken into account.

The Committee generally meets four times a year and you will be able to claim travel expenses and an attendance allowance where we need you to attend a meeting (£50 for up to four hours and £100 for more than four hours).
