East Devon District Council's (EDDC) Communities team has arranged events in Exmouth and Sidmouth to highlight the importance of fire doors and the role they play in protecting lives and properties.

Knowing the 5-step check of what to look out for and what to do if you spot a problem with a fire door, might prevent fatalities in the event of a fire.

Fire Door Safety Week events will be taking place at Morgan Court Community Centre in Exmouth on Tuesday 26 September from 10am to 1pm, and Lymebourne Park Community Centre in Sidmouth on Wednesday 27 September from 10am to 12pm.

Representatives from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the contractor Jones Building Group will be offering advice and answering questions.

Refreshments will be provided, and there will be a competition, with the chance to win prizes.

Councillor Paul Arnott, leader of the council, said:

"‘The tragic example of Grenfell demonstrated yet again the crucial role of doors in preventing the spread of fire. It’s one of those things we never think will happen to us. I am really pleased that East Devon’s Communities team is actively promoting this in Exmouth and Sidmouth.’"
