Staff and volunteers at Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) have been accredited for their climate literacy knowledge.

As a society, what steps do we need to take to achieve net-zero?

Climate Champions from the THG staff and volunteers have been contemplating this question. They have now completed their Carbon Literacy Training and are certified to the Carbon Literacy standard.

Carbon Literacy is "an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

The gallery is at the forefront of climate delivery for East Devon through their exhibition programme and CLIMATE CONVERSATIONS events and talks exploring climate issues through the lens of art and culture.

The staff who initiated the climate training, then proactively took on the role of trainers themselves to train five more staff and volunteers over a four-week climate literacy course. Finally, the team challenged themselves to commit to both an individual and a group pledge to reduce their carbon footprints.

The training was delivered through The Carbon Literacy Project run by the Carbon Literacy Trust. Through the Carbon Literacy Project, over 96,685 individuals from over 7,573 organisations are now Carbon Literate.

"Congratulations to all the staff and volunteers who have completed the carbon literacy training.
They will now be able to put this knowledge to good use in their climate-related exhibitions, talks and events inspiring gallery visitors to make changes.

It is fantastic that they have committed to making carbon reductions at the gallery as well as reducing their own carbon footprint at home.

Special thanks to THG volunteer, Sherryl, who dedicated many hours of her own time to the project, going above and beyond the original remit to deliver a full training programme to her colleagues."
