The creativity of council tenants is showcased in a new exhibition at Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton and the Manor Pavilion Theatre & Arts Centre in Sidmouth
Tenants of all ages, from 18 to 90, from East Devon District Council’s general needs and supported housing have submitted a wide variety of wonderful artworks for inclusion in a new exhibition being held at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) in Honiton and the Manor Pavilion Theatre and Arts Centre in Sidmouth. All the artists are amateurs working from a domestic environment and, for many, this was the first time they have shown their work publicly.
Angela Blackwell, the curator at THG has been hard at work with Lucinda Cliff, East Devon District Council’s Mobile Support Officer preparing the exhibition. The judging panel consisted of Angela from THG and Tim Woolgar from Hybrid Gallery in Honiton. They selected 40 artworks from an impressive 110 submissions put forward by housing tenants from across the district.
In her role as curator, Angela has curated the exhibition upstairs at the Honiton gallery, selecting and installing the works and also choosing the artworks for the Manor Pavilion in Sidmouth.
Artist Nigel Walton’s artwork ‘What we can be’ was selected as the Best in Show and he was awarded a prize of £100. The runner up was Angela Bea for her artwork ‘Sunflower Angel’, for which she received a prize of £50. Both artworks are on display at the East Devon Tenant Exhibition at THG until 26 August.
Commenting on his win, Nigel Walton said:
Winning this prize has meant a lot to me as I have not painted with purpose since I left University nearly ten years ago. It has re-ignited a creative passion that I had lost and I hope to continue painting and maybe one day make it a career. For this I cannot thank East Devon District Council and THG enough.
THG Curator Angela Blackwell said:
One of our key aims at THG is to support both emerging and established artists in the South West. Through this exhibition, we want to shine a light on the artistic talents of East Devon tenants.
We are delighted to hold the exhibition alongside our main Evolver exhibition. This brings a dedicated art audience to see the work of East Devon tenants. It’s such a shame we can’t accommodate all the entries, but those we have selected really show the diversity of talent.
Many of the artworks are for sale and 100% of the purchase price goes directly to the artist. Visitors to the exhibition can vote for their favourite piece of work at both venues and those winners will receive £50 each, so don’t forget to come and place your vote.
