East Devon District Council follow the recommendations of the appropriate Town or Parish Council when allocating new street names. Town and Parish Council's discuss new naming suggestions at their next scheduled meeting and a name is chosen that is acceptable to Royal Mail and that meets the criteria outlined in our Street Name and Numbering Policy.

Town or Parish Council's where possible derive street names from the tithe apportionment data which was captured in the decade or so after 1836. The tithe maps and apportionments are an important source of information about the history and topography of a parish.
