We operate a Boat, Kayak and Winch Registration Scheme for pleasure boats (ie those used for recreation by you and your family) which allows storage in dedicated areas at:

  • Beer
  • Sidmouth
  • Budleigh Salterton 
  • Exmouth (Shelly beach)

Boats cannot be stored on our other beaches.

Please note that spaces for boats, kayaks and winches are limited on some beaches and waiting lists apply.

To register, please complete our online form or we can post or email one to you. Please make sure you read the conditions first.  

Once you have completed your form,  attached Public Liability Insurance for a minimum of £3 million for your boat, kayak or winch and you have paid the current fee we will send you a registration sticker which should be fixed to the stern of your boat or kayak. 

Winch registration are more or less the same except we ask you to paint the ID number on the winch housing.

The annual registration fee for a boat or winch site is £98.00 each. The annual registration fee for a Kayak or Paddle Board is £31.50 each. Public liability insurance for a minimum of £3 million is also required.

With the increased popularity of Kayaks and Paddleboards, and water sports in general, we have introduced a weekly holiday charge for those people who wish to temporarily store a boat or kayak etc. on one of our beaches. Boats will be charged at £10.00 per week and Kayaks and Paddleboards will be charged at £5.00 per week. Please note that security and safety of you vessel remains your responsibility at all times.

Any unregistered boats or other items will be removed and may be destroyed or disposed of it not claimed.

If you wish to operate a commercial boat (ie, one used in any kind of business) from our beaches you must apply for a licence from our properties department using the following form: Application for a Commercial Passenger & Fishing Boat Concession on Council Beaches (eastdevon.gov.uk)

You may use a kayak, paddle board or small boat from any of our beaches without a registration so long as you take the vessel home after use, and it is not left on the beach. If you wish to store a boat or kayak on our beaches it must be registered before doing so.
