3. How to Create a Friends Group

How to Create a Friends Group

A Friends Group is formed when six or more people come together with shared aims for their local green space. Each group must make its own constitution that clearly sets out its aims and objectives, which need to be decided upon together by the group.

The activities of a Friends Group are determined by the level of commitment its members are able to make. Friends Groups can operate at a low level, meeting occasionally and issuing an annual newsletter, or they can be more active, meeting regularly, lobbying support to develop their green space, and holding events to raise funds for improvements.

If you are interested in forming a Friends Group for one of East Devon’s green spaces, please consult with the East Devon District Council Parks & Gardens team who manage many of East Devon’s green spaces. You can then meet other volunteers with the same interests and talk to other volunteers about starting a Friends Group, if the green space does not already have a Friends Group. We can guide you through each step and provide an example constitution for you to develop.

The best starting point is to register your interest in volunteering in one or more of East Devon District Council’s green spaces by filling out our form.
