11. Single Person Discount review

If you have recently received a single person discount review letter, it’s because East Devon District Council is reviewing anyone who gets a 25% discount on their Council Tax bill. To get this discount you would have told East Devon District Council that you are the only adult resident in the property.

The review letter must be responded to, even if you are still the only adult resident. Failure to complete the review will result in your single person discount being removed from at least 1 April 2023, as well as a penalty of £70 being added.

Sometimes people forget to tell us of a change, which could include:

  • a partner, tenant or other individual moving in,
  • the property becoming a second home, or
  • a child turning 18 and other personal circumstances.

You can use this review to tell us of any changes where you are no longer the sole adult occupier. For any other changes please use our contact us form

The review is being managed on the Council’s behalf by Capacitygrid. Their contact details are on the review letter you have received.

Completing the discount review letter

Please complete the form, where you can declare that you are still living alone or tell us of the change to the number of adults living in the property.

It will take around 10 minutes to complete, but you will need the passcode numbers on your review letter.

Unable to complete the discount review online?

Please contact Capacitygrid for help on freephone 0808 168 8923 between 8:45a.m. and 5:00p.m. Monday to Friday.

Why carry out this review?

This discount is currently claimed by 32% of households in the East Devon area and in the 2024/25 financial year will account for approximately a £13 million reduction. East Devon District Council, therefore, intends to make sure that the single person discount is granted only to eligible residents to safeguard public funds from fraud and error.
