17. Is there still a policy of managed realignment along the Maer?
The Shoreline Management Plan adopted in 2011 outlined the possibility for managed realignment of the Maer.
This involves allowing the shoreline to move backwards or forwards, with management to control or limit movement, and can include reducing erosion or building new defences.
However, the Exe Estuary Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy (EEFCERMS) produced in 2013 established that this option was not viable, and therefore the policy of “Hold the Line” (maintaining or improving hard-defences in their current location) has been adopted.
